Paper first, every step
This is the week the year turns. Everything before it solved equations where x appeared once. A quadratic has x squared, which means it usually has two answers, and the trick for finding them is beautifully simple: if two things multiply to zero, one of them has to be zero. That single sentence is the whole method.

Solving a quadratic by factoring
Get everything on one side so the other side is zero. This step is not optional and it is where most errors start.
Factor the left side into two binomials.
Set each factor equal to zero separately and solve. You get two answers, and both are real answers.
The vertical line test
Draw or imagine a vertical line sweeping across the graph.
If it ever touches the graph in two places at once, the relation is not a function.
One input, one output. That is the whole requirement.
Value problems
Two columns again: how many, and what each is worth.
Number times value equals total value, one row per kind of item.
Two equations, two unknowns, then solve the system.

Solve x2 + 5x + 6 = 0. The right side is already zero. Factor the left: two numbers multiplying to 6 and adding to 5 are 2 and 3. (x + 2)(x + 3) = 0, so either x + 2 = 0 or x + 3 = 0. ANSWER: x = −2 or x = −3

Solve x2 − 9 = 0. Difference of two squares: (x + 3)(x − 3) = 0. Set each factor to zero. ANSWER: x = 3 or x = −3
