Reducing Fractions to Lowest Terms Reducing a fraction means rewriting it with the smallest number possible in both the numerator (top) and the denominator (bottom) To reduce a fraction: • Divide both the top and the bottom by the same number: the greatest common factor (GCF)

Instructional notes

Proper and Improper Fractions A proper fraction has a numerator that is smaller than the denominator. An improper fraction has a numerator that is equal to or greater than the denominator.

To change an improper fraction to a mixed number: • Divide the numerator by the denominator • Write any remainder as a reduced fraction

Equivalent Fractions Equivalent fractions mean equal fractions. It is a different way to write the same amount. To find an equivalent fraction: • Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. To check: cross multiply. If the products are equal, the fractions are equivalent.
