Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers

To divide a decimal by a whole number: • Place decimal in quotient directly above

Annexing Zeros when Dividing All whole numbers have an understood decimal point after the ones place. Annexing or adding a decimal point and zeros after the ones place does not change the value.

To avoid a remainder or a fraction when dividing: • Add zeroes to the right of the decimal • Continue to divide

Metric Measures of Capacity and Weight

To convert metric measures: • Write metric prefix abbreviations from largest to smallest. Be sure to include the unit. • Determine direction Moving left = divide Moving right = multiply • How many units are being moved?Move the decimal

Repeating Decimals

We have only dealt with dividing decimals that terminate, or end. However, sometimes you may find that as you divide the quotient begins to repeat one or more digits over and over. This is a repeating decimal. When this happens, we place a bar over the repeated digits in the quotient.
