Metric Measurement Equations

Rewrite the equation using only the desired measure • Draw a box around the measures that are different • Convert the boxed measurements • Solve

Practice

Solve each metric measurement equation.

3.67 daL - 215 dL = 1.52 daL 0.5 kg + 82 g = 582 g

220 daL - 180 dL = 218.2 daL 167.8 cg + 12.6 hg = 126,167.8 cg

Rounding Decimals

To round a decimal:

Underline the digit in the place you want to round to • Circle the digit to the right___ If the digit is 5 or more, you will round the underlined digit up If the digit is less than 5, the underlined digit stays the _same_

Example

Round each number to the place indicated. Number to be Ones Tenths Hundredths rounded

Why is estimation useful as a tool to check your math work? Give an example of when estimation catches a mistake. Suggested Answer: "Estimation gives you an approximate answer quickly. If your exact answer is very different from your estimate, you probably made a mistake. For example, if you multiply 1.97 × 5 and get 98.5 instead of 9.85, estimating 2 × 5 = 10 would tell you 98.5 is way too big."
