Name Definition Drawing Angle • 2 rays with a shared endpoint called a vertex Adjacent Angle • 2 angles that share a vertex and a side Right Angle • Measures 90°

Acute Angle • Measures < 90°

Obtuse Angle • > 90° but < 180°

Straight Angle • Measures = 180°

Example

Instructional notes

Using a Protractor to Measure Angles: • Place the vertex marker of the protractor at the vertex of the angle. • Rotate the protractor until the horizontal line extending from the vertex marker is on one side of the angle • Read the scale of the protractor to see where the other side of the angle intersects the protractor. You may need to extend the line using a straight edge to measure.

To Draw an Angle Using a Protractor: • Use the straight edge to draw one of the angle’s rays • Place the vertex marker of the protractor at the vertex of the angle and the horizontal line on the ray • Mark the correct degree measure • Use the straight edge to draw a ray from the vertex to the mark

Closed Figures and Polygons

A point where two sides meet is called a vertex. A diagonal is a line segment that joins two opposite vertices.

explain why a circle is a closed figure but not a polygon.
