Dividing a Whole Number by a Fraction

To divide a whole number by a fraction: • Change all whole numbers and mixed numbers to improper fractions • Keep the first fraction • Change to multiplication • Flip the second fraction (the reciprocal) • Cancel if possible • Multiply the two fractions • Change improper fraction if needed

When dividing a whole number by a fraction, why do we ‘flip and multiply’? What does it mean to divide by a fraction? Suggested Answer: “Dividing by a fraction asks: how many times does this fraction fit into the whole number? Flipping and multiplying is a shortcut that gives the same answer. For example, 6 ÷ 12 asks how many halves are in 6. Since each whole has 2 halves, 6 × 2 = 12 halves."
