Once for the story, once for the job. The first read is allowed to be confused. The second read is looking for work to do.
In your own words, out loud if you can: what is this actually asking for? If you cannot say it yet, read it again. That is normal, not slow.
Circle every number and write one word next to it saying what it IS: miles, dollars, hours, boards. A number without a label is a trap.
The labels choose the operation or the formula, not your mood. Distance and hours are asking about rate. Parts of a whole are asking about fractions. Money in and money out is asking you to subtract.
Swap the words for symbols, one for one, and the story disappears. What is left is math you already know how to do.
Put your answer back into the story and make it live there. Does a person really walk four hundred miles in an hour? No. Then the math confesses, and you fix it, and that is the whole game.
This works on every problem in every room, and it will keep working in every math class you ever take.
